Florence Gets Her Chance

Russell Conwell had just finished delivering his Acres of Diamonds talk to the enthusiastic crowd who’d gathered at the Harrisburg train station. But then he did something no one expected.

Conwell turned to the young girl who’d been standing on the platform with him and said, “Florence, would you care to share a few words to the gathering?”

Such an invitation would have thrown most people into a state of utter panic, but Florence seemed calm and in total control of herself. What an amazing showing of poise for someone so young. Where does such confidence come from? I wondered.

With an air of confidence I’m sure I could not have mustered, Florence stepped forward and began…

If there is one thing I have learned in my long and tumultuous seventeen years on this Earth…

The comment brought immediate laughter from the audience before she continued:

…It is that, while we cannot always control our thoughts, we can control our words. And it is the repetition of the right words that impresses the subconscious, and we are then the master of the situation.

In the sixth chapter of Jeremiah, we read: “I set a watchman over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet.”

Your success and happiness in life depend upon the watchman at the gate of your thoughts, which sooner or later, crystallizes on the external.

Sadly, people think by running away from a negative situation, they will be rid of it, but the same situation confronts them wherever they go.

Many people are cutting out fear pictures, seeing things that are not divinely planned. However, with the “single eye,” man sees only the truth. He sees through evil, knowing that out of it comes good. He transmutes injustice into justice, and disarms his seeming enemy by sending out goodwill to all.

We read in mythology of the giant Cyclops, said to have inhabited Sicily. These giants had only one eye in the middle of the forehead.

Well, I say that you are indeed a giant when you have a single eye! Every thought will be a constructive thought, and every word, a word of power.

Let the third eye be the watchman at your gate! If, therefore, thine eye be single, thy whole body is full of light! With the single eye your body will be transformed into your spiritual body—the “body electric” made in God’s likeness and image!

By seeing clearly the perfect plan, we can redeem the world with our inner eye, seeing a world of peace… and a world of plenty… and a world of love and goodwill toward one another!

I could not believe my eyes! Just as they had for Dr. Conwell, the crowd burst into wild applause.

Dr. Conwell stepped forward and hugged Florence, almost as if he were a proud father, and turned to address the crowd one last time:

In leaving, I say—that should you be thinking to yourself, “What does one so young know of life?” Then you shall not be cheating Florence; you shall be cheating yourself! For she
